Behind the Pop

The video took about 6 weeks to make but I was working on a freelance animation at the time which severely cut into this videos time. If I were to make an estimate I'd say this video took me about 2 or 3 weeks of work to actually make.

This was the very first drawing for the bathroom. If you squint it kind of looks like a bathroom.

This was my storyboard/animatic. Those are some fancy urinals.
And the final.

The first draft storyboard and the final video are very similar. Pretty much everything I wrote in the first storyboard made it into the final video. That rarely happens.
Lookin' good.
Tense scribbles.
And the final shot.
The janitor.

This is what my Final Cut Pro file looked like. I animated the entire movie in Flash and exported it as a movie file(using Swivel). I exported one shot (the explosion) into After Effects where I added the beam effect. I then started doing sound design. I make majority of the sound effects myself but I also use free public domain sound libraries. I also recorded the voice here. Normally you are supposed to record voices ahead of time but in this movies case I wasn't sure if I was going to have any lines so I waited. After I put key sounds in place I cut down the animation. Gaps in movement and sound are edited out. I'll add any visual effects after all of that has been done (like smoke. camera shaking lighting, and zooms). And that is pretty much it. Pretty lengthy process for 1 minute of animation, right?

I started writing a new comic strip! You should totally check it out. I'm also uploading Directionless onto that website.

I still plan on remaking Brandon this summer. The plan is to film the short in July/August and to complete it over the course of the new few months. I may also film a couple of bonus scenes while I am working with the cast. I decided against the Kickstarter for now.

As for my next animation? I would really love to release stuff more frequently but while I am doing freelance that isn't possible (I don't have the time). But my goal is still to release a new animation by the end of this month!

Concept art for my next animation? Hopefully yes.

A new cartoon! This one had a pretty random production cycle but I am happy to finished with it! I had to take on a few freelance projects which slowed it down. I also started 2 other cartoons while making this one and canceled both of them(both of them weren't turning out very funny). So in other words, this cartoon should have been released a month ago.

You could say this is a direct follow-up to The Push Up Challenge in terms of style. I like these "life story" style videos so I think I'll make a few more.

I am in the planning stages of doing a Kickstarter for a sequel to Brandon. It would be a short film. It is written I just need to figure everything out for the budget. The funding is because I want the live action segments to be deliciously good which means I need a crew, location, actors and people who know what they are doing. I want to start the Kickstarter May 1st and film the movie this summer. I also would use the time to film a bonus short. So two shorts for the price of one?

And I am still writing Directionless? I've actually put together another animation for Directionless but we will see if I actually make it.

First animation of 2014 starts out with a boob, I mean a Bang!

This movie took much longer than it should have to make. I originally planned on it taking one week but that wasn't possible. Christmas, New Years, and I caught a cold (which hindered the voice acting process). Anyways, onto some production details.

The movie was originally about anime and fan service. It was going to take place in an anime studio. Because I just released a short unsuccessful anime parody the week prior I decided to steer away from the anime theme.

I composed the first piece of music we hear while the rest of the music is public domain John Philip Souza. I composed two other pieces but neither of them sounded as good as the Souza march.

There was one joke I wrote but didn't put in the movie. During the last chaotic scene where all the businessmen are going nuts I wanted the camera to cut to a somebody in the back of the room saying they weren't impressed.

The girl that is being presented in the movie is the main character from Your Bones. There isn't any real meaning there, I just thought it'd be cool to have that reference. That's not the only reference in the movie.

The girl being presented!

Final version.

A funny face in the storyboard.

The final version.
I was undecided about the actual add for awhile so I drew that placeholder sketch which I ended up cleaning up and using in the final version!
My first (written) draft had all identical looking businessmen. When I storyboarded it I thought it would be boring only having one businessman design so I put together these 7 guys. I storyboarded the entire movie revolving around their individual actions. But by the end I wanted the room full of people so following individuals didn't work out.

I just designed a bunch of similar looking business men and for each action I would just use one of those designs. Because of this the movie has terrible continuity. Certain business men sit down in one spot and then in the next angle they are somewhere else.
Lets see....anything else? If I can think of anything else I'll edit this post and add more.

As for the next projects, I have a longer comedy short that will most likely take me a few weeks. I haven't decided on it's visual style but the entire short is written and ready to be made! I've got two other shorts (one a parody and one that takes place in a business meeting) that are "week long" projects like Winter Shower and Mononoke's Deleted Scene. I also have a music video I am working on but that won't be done for quite awhile.

I also am still writing Directionless the comic. I probably won't animate another Directionless cartoon but never say never. The comic will also end this year(maybe next year depending on how long it takes to close out). I initially set off with the goal of writing Directionless until Jeff found his direction in life which I thought would take 4 to 6 years. I have written this years arc and if all goes to plan it seems he will figure out his direction! It will be exciting!

I really would like to release another movie this month!
